TAKE 5 with Team Mammut Australia // Oliver 'Dozer' Naylor

TAKE 5 with Team Mammut Australia // Oliver 'Dozer' Naylor

MAMMUT HAS RICH HERITAGE IN THE MOUNTAINS. WHAT’S YOUR HERITAGE/BACKGROUND?
(Name, hometown, sport/past time etc)

My name is Oliver Naylor, I am 11 years old and I am Anaiwan. I was born in Armidale New South Wales. When I was about 6 my family moved up to The Sunshine Coast, which is where my passion for rock climbing began. It all started because of my brother Ethan. He had always enjoyed rock climbing but due to his asthma he could not climb in Armidale. So, when we moved up to The Sunshine Coast, he started climbing lessons. I had to watch and wait, I found it difficult and boring to just watch him. One day I was really agitated watching him and mum said, “You can either read your book or you can start climbing classes”, so, I started climbing. I really liked it and also discovered I was actually pretty good at it too! I used to play soccer as well as climb, but last year I decided to focus on climbing and quit soccer. I now have so much more time to get to crags!

MAMMUT PRODUCTS ARE TESTED IN THE MOST EXTREME LOCATIONS. WHERE’S THE MOST EXTREME LOCATION YOU’VE BEEN WITH YOUR MAMMUT GEAR?

The most extreme location that I have been with my Mammut gear was probably Tasmania because we did some sick climbing there and some spots were a bit difficult to get to. We know it is not the most extreme place in the world but our adventures have yet to properly start and eventually I would like to take the gear all around the world.

MAMMUT IS KNOWN FOR QUALITY AND INNOVATION. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF MAMMUT GEAR?

My favourite piece of Mammut gear is probably my harness because it is so light and really comfy so when you are at a competition and climbing it feels like there is nothing around your hips but, at the same time if you are projecting something and sitting in the harness it is so comfy you could sit there all day.

CV-19 HAS FORCED US TO ADVENTURE AT HOME. WHAT HAVE YOU TAKEN FROM THE CV-19 SITUATION?

I have taken a lot from the CV-19 scenario but mostly I am especially grateful for where I live and what I have. I actually really liked it because we built a climbing wall in our back yard and after I did my work in the home-learning period I could go outside and climb. I reckon if I did not have it once the gyms were open, I would be really weak, but I am actually still pretty strong still because of it.

WORDS OF WISDOM?

Anytime you finish a climb, there's always the next thing you can try (Alex Honnold).
